Diagnosis

Varicose vein disease can be very complex and is always diverse, as each patient presents with a unique set of circumstances. Both diagnostic and therapeutic expertise is key in being able to correctly diagnose and treat the problem.

The work up begins with a good history and physical examination. Once the diagnosis of varicose veins is established, the next step is to obtain a duplex ultrasound study by a vein specialist. this is the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of venous reflux, which is the cause of the varicose veins. This study uses an ultrasound machine (noninvasive testing) to visualize both deep and superficial venous systems in great detail. Interpretation of this study will allow your physician to delineate the exact location of the “leaky” vein that is causing the back flow and the varicose veins.

This precise testing is absolutely necessary because it enables Doctor Schiro to come up with a very specific treatment plan that is tailored exactly to your situation.
