Welcome to The Vein Center of Sarasota

Home Page Legs If varicose veins are making you uncomfortable, zapping them with laser or radiofrequency energy is a great option.

Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem but are a significant health issue that requires expertise in diagnosis and treatment. The Vein Center of Sarasota offers state of the art minimally invasive varicose vein treatment.

Varicose veins are bulging, enlarged veins commonly found on the back of the calves or inside of the legs. They are caused by leaky valves that allow blood to flow backwards. Besides being ugly, varicose veins can cause aches and discomfort in your legs and even lead to leg ulcers.

Patients that present with vein problems typically experience leg swelling, tired legs, leg heaviness, restless legs, aching legs, throbbing legs and itching legs. These problems become worse with prolonged standing and are relieved with elevation.

Traditionally, varicose veins have been treated by surgery called ligation and vein stripping in which veins are tied off to redirect blood flow and then the culprit vein is pulled out. This is done under general or spinal anesthesia in the hospital and results in a significant amount of discomfort and downtime for the patient.

With the new minimally invasive techniques used at the Vein Center of Sarasota, treatment of varicose veins can be accomplished in an outpatient setting with minimal downtime and no hospitalization. Two options available are radiofrequency ablation using VNUS Closure and endovenous laser ablation.

Laser and radiofrequency treatment of varicose veins typically takes about an hour and can be done as an outpatient at the Vein Center of Sarasota. A local anesthetic is used so that the procedure can be done with very little pain or discomfort.

The tip of the laser or radiofrequency catheter is inserted into the skin through a needle puncture and the heat from the laser or radiofrequency device closes the leaky vein forcing blood to flow normally into other veins. Typically the procedure completely seals the great saphenous vein, a large vein that runs down the inside of the leg. Most of the blood flow in the leg goes through hidden deep veins so closing this usually is not an issue.

After closing the problem vein with a laser or radiofrequency catheter, you may still have residual varicose veins or spider veins that can be treated expertly by Dr. Schiro using microphlebectomy techniques and spider vein treatment.

The Vein Center of Sarasota serves patients in Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Venice, Englewood, and Northport.
